MHS Varsity Golf competed in their first event of 2018 on Friday and Saturday. The team traveled to Springfield, Ohio to play in The Southern Swing Invitational for the fourth consecutive year. Once again, the field was extremely competitive. Five of the top six ranked teams in Division 1 were participating as well as Flint Powers, the number one ranked team in Division 2.

Drew Gandy 79
Carter Hazen 89
Luke Butler 94
David Draves 96
Jackson Shinske 96
MHS 358 was in 15th place out of 18 teams after the first round. Warm but windy conditions made scoring difficult. Low round was Matt Knight of Flint Powers with a even par 72. Drew Gandy was in 18th place individually for the Chemic. Lake Orion (Ranked #6 in Division 1) was in the lead with 301 and Birmingham Seaholm (Ranked #2 in Division 1) was in second with a tally of 308.
Day #2 – Saturday, April 14
Drew Gandy 77
David Draves 83
Carter Hazen 90
Jackson Shinske 90
Luke Butler 95
MHS improved their team score by 18 shots on Saturday. David Draves had a tremendous round with a 13 shot improvement. Drew Gandy started slow but finished one under over the last 7 holes.
“We have not had many quality opportunities to practice our short game and unfortunately that was our biggest deficiency this weekend. I look forward to banging some balls out of the sand and rolling the rock for a few hours on the short game practice area with the guys.”
“Extremely pleased with David Draves round on Saturday. It was obvious he was much more comfortable with his swing and short game. If he continues to play at that level, our team competitive level jumps up a few notches.”
Weather permitting, MHS is back in action this Friday and Saturday at The Nightmare & The Dream Invitational.
