Teamwork is a hallmark of Chemic Pride. Aristotle wrote, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Chemic Hall of Fame football and baseball coach Terry Wilczek often praised his teams for their ability to make 2 + 2 = 5. In that spirit, Midland High School Athletics and Firehouse Subs on Eastman Ave in Midland are proud to recognize a teammate of the week who epitomizes selflessness and demonstrates a commitment to the success of his/her team. Just because the spring sports are not playing any games in 2020 doesn’t mean that there is a lack of great teammates to honor.
This week’s honoree is a member of the girls soccer team, Senior, Taryn Vielma.
Head Coach Rodrigo Barassi nominated Taryn by writing:
“Taryn has been a leader on and off the field. She organized the futsal off-season team, the winter team at the dome, plus lead the winter training sessions.
Taryn was integral in pushing our girls to be involved, helped with the fundraiser in early winter and worked with the other captains on the team shirt logo. Since practice was suspended in March, Taryn has been in contact with our team after the season pumping up our girls with positive messages. She is a true captain who wants the Chemics to be great. Words I would use to describe her: humble, coachable, driven. I can’t speak any more highly of someone more deserving.”
Taryn is the daughter of Janna Luebkert and Junior Vielma. Taryn has served as a class representative on student council all four years. She is also a drum major for the MHS marching band, a Chemic ambassador, and a member of NHS, BPA and SAVE clubs.
