The Chemic Girls soccer team won the MHSAA regional in a thrilling Overtime 3-2 win against Grandville on Friday night at Rockford Rams stadium.
Midland advances to the MHSAA state semifinal for the first time since 1987 to face Grand Blanc on Tuesday, June 12th at Holt High School. Kickoff is at 6:00.
The Chemics and Bobcats did not meet in 2018. Grand Blanc ended the Chemics’ 2017 season in the Regional Semifinal.
The game was tied 0-0 heading into halftime. Midland scored two quick goals early in the second half to seemingly capture the momentum. The first was a header by Abbie Fowler – assist to Carlee Davis – on a corner kick just four minutes into the the half. Just a minute later Maya Albright knocked in a goal following a Chemic free-kick.
Grandville would answer back with 33:15 remaining to cut the score 2-1. The Bulldogs capitalized on a penalty kick after a foul was called inside the 18 to tie the score 2-2 with 12:02 remaining on the clock. The game remained tied through the rest of regulation.
Neither team scored in the first 10:00 overtime.
With 2:37 left in the 2nd OT period, Maya Albright found the upper left corner of the net over the extended hands of the Grandville Keeper. The Chemics successfully defended the balance of OT to avoid a shootout and claim the Regional Trophy.
