Meet the captains of the 2016 Girls Cross Country team
Ella Colbert: I began running cross country in 8th grade and this will be my fourth year running for Midland High. I enjoy running because it challenges me both physically and mentally and is a good way for me to stay in shape. My goal for this season is to PR and run negative splits during my races. My goal for the team is to make sure everyone is having fun and supporting each other throughout the season.
Hope Kessler: I love running because it gives you a chance to push yourself as hard as you can, and I like that your success isn’t determined by how you compare to others, but rather by how you compare to yourself. Over the course of the season, I really want to create a fun, team environment that will continue to attract all different types of people to run cross country and give the underclassman a positive experience like the previous captains did for me. My favorite part about being on the team is definitely the spaghetti dinners – I love that we can all just hang out together and eat some good food. In the future I plan on going to college and studying business.
Taylor McGuirk: I began running cross country during my sophomore year. My favorite part is that it is a great way to stay in shape and make new friends. Many of my favorite xc memories come from hanging out at pasta dinners and meets. Next year, I plan to attend a university and major in the medical field. I’m not certain what area of medicine.
Abby Avery: I started my sophomore year to get in better shape. Now I like running because it helps me take a step back when I’m stressed and it gives me time to think. My favorite memories of being on the team include the many spaghetti dinners and wearing my footy pajamas to meets. My goal for this season is to give my best at every race and to kick hard at the end every time. I hope the team encourages each other to push themselves harder. One year from now I will be at college to pursue a career in Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, or Prosthetics/Orthotics.
Meet the captains of the 2016 boys cross country team
Nick Berchert: I began running my freshman year as a way to stay in shape and fell in love with it. I enjoy running because when I do, I’m running with my friends. I would like to make it back to my freshman year times, and for our team to get to states this year. I remember when i was running with Hobie Fischer at a late night run and we told ghost stories to freak out the other runners. One year from now I will be attending Ferris State University for Welding Engineering .
Hanbuyl Johnson: I began running in 8th grade. Before that I hadn’t run much but now have been on the cross country team every year since. I enjoy running because it is a great way to hang out with my friends and it feels good to run, both while running and afterwards. I love being able to say that I am a runner. I am proud of this. My goal for this season is to qualify for States, and break 17:00 early in the season. I really want to see the team get closer in our times. My future plans are to attend a university to study Computer Software Engineering, hopefully U of M Engineering or Michigan Tech.
Jacob Krueger: I started running in elementary school because my older brothers and sisters all ran. I enjoy being on the team because of all the past captains who made running fun and because of Coach Hollenbeck and Mrs. Coach; they’re the best. My goal for this year is to get into the high 18’s. My team goal is that we work together to improve ourselves physically – and have a lot of fun! My favorite memories are of the pasta dinners – great food and great people.
